We all start our career in a single business area. We might develop into experts in one or even two areas over that first 5 to 10 years of experience. However, as a CEO, GM, COO or founder you need to be very good at about 12 different disciplines to succeed. You need to plan strategies, communicate and coordinate resources across all key areas of a business. You need to know how to select and manage people that have the expert skills you do not have. You need to effectively design and manage departments for: Sales, Marketing, Finance, Operations and Product Development. Today you need a system to design and optimize your business model. The learning curve for this is never ending and usually takes at least 5 years as a CEO and likely 10. I am still learning every day, and I do not expect that to ever stop.
